After a long and exciting trek through Africa, there’s nothing more satisfying than a genuine African meal. Luckily for me, during my Monkey Kingdom Event press trip, I didn’t have to leave the country for any of this amazing experience.
Imagine exotic and delicious foods presented before you while you gaze out over the African Savannah, an experience possible only in Africa and, of course, at Sanaa Restaurant in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
This post is part of a #MonkeyKingdomEvent series with Disney. I am receiving transportation and accommodations for this event in exchange for sharing my experience with our readers. All opinions are my own.
At Animal Kingdom in the Kidani Village Lodge, Sanaa is a gorgeous restaurant that serves a mix of African and Indian cuisine, cooked using authentic methods like slow roasting and tandoori oven cooking. As someone who doesn’t care to try new foods – I tend to stick with the same-ol’ foods – it was so exciting and rewarding trying so many new dishes and treats!
You might start with the bread service, as the variety of tastes will impress you even if the presentation doesn’t (which it will!). You’ll have your choice of 3 breads (from traditional Naan, garlic-ginger Naan, spiced Naan onion Kucha or Pappadum) and your choice of 3 accompaniments – though we were spoiled with many more. There is Red Chile Sambal, Cucumber Raita, Coriander Chutney, Mango Chutney, Coconut Chutney, Garlic Pickle, Spicy Jalapeño-Lime Pickle, Roasted Red Bell Pepper Hummus, or Tamarind Chutney – all equally delicious and amazing.
Not sure sure which to order? The staff at Sanaa Restaurant is amazing, helpful, and are eager to not only help you choose the right menu items that will be to your liking, but they’ll share recipes, as well!
Their salads – Chickpeas with Cucumber and Tomato; Watermelon, Cucumber and Fennel; Kachumbari; Mango; or Bhel Puri – are colorful, fun and delicious. The familiar ingredients blended with exotic ones is a great balance for people like me who are hesitant to try new or unfamiliar dishes.
Something every food lover should be familiar with? Dessert! I wasn’t completely aware of what I ate while eating it, nor did I care. From the decadent chocolate mousse with a how-did-they-do-that chocolate butterfly perched atop, to the Kulfi with fresh pineapple (Kulfi is a frozen dairy dessert, like ice cream) to the coconut cheesecake with zebra printed chocolate, I was in African heaven.
There was nothing left on my plate. Nothing. I even licked the Kenya coffee and caramel sauce that topped the mousse. I am not ashamed.
Sanaa Restaurant is the perfect date night out away from the kids or the perfect family meal choice. You can even make reservations to dine with an animal specialist! There are vegetarian food options as well as more familiar, kid-friendly fare like hamburgers and pizza.
