This year will be filled with tons of travel for our family, from blog conferences to family vacation and everything in between. We do what we can to find products and tech that makes travel much easier so we were excited to give ZUS – a smart car charger and car locator – a try.

We received a ZUS to facilitate our review. All opinions are our own and were not influenced.

ZUS Smart Car Charger and locator

What Is ZUS?

ZUS by Nonda is a dual USB charger that plugs into your cigarette lighter in your car. It has the ability to charge two devices simultaneously and claims to do so with the same quality charge, no matter if your device is an iOS or Android.

It also features something that no other device charger has; it can use your phone’s GPS to help you locate your car. We’ve all had those moments when we’ve landed at the airport after a long business trip or walked out of a busy grocery store, completely devoid of any memory of where we parked our car. ZUS can help!

ZUS will use its free app and your phone’s GPS to locate where you parked last, letting you know the approximate distance and direction that you need to follow to find your car. For me, that makes the low $35.99 retail price worth it.

Another feature that ZUS has that other chargers don’t is the ability to use a cooling system to prevent devices from overheating while they’re being charged.

ZUS keeps devices cool while they're being charged

One issue that we did have with ZUS was the charging speed, which ZUS claims to be up to 2X faster than normal car chargers. When we connected just one of our Samsung S6 Edge smartphones to our normal 2.1A  car charger and looked at the charge time remaining, it seemed to be the exact same amount of time as when we plugged it into the ZUS charger.

We asked a rep at Nonda, and here’s what their response was:

Fast-charging can be affected by a number of factors. The first thing you could check is your charge cable. If you are not using your device’s OEM charging cable and using a generic one, fast-charging may not work.

In our laboratory tests, with a good charge cable, the charging current can reach 2.4 ampere.

Also, ZUS will not be able to fast-charge newer devices running on processors with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge technology, as they require certified accessories to work, which ZUS is not. ZUS can only charge such devices with standard/normal speed.”
It should be noted that we were NOT using the OEM charging cord, but we were using the phone that the brand used in the example on their site to compare charging times.

Overall, we’re pleased with the performance and capabilities of ZUS and LOVE that it’s able to able to withstand temps as high as 100ÂșC, as it’s the only car charger to meet US Military MIL-STD-810G High Temperature Standard.

  1. Hi there: Maisa from nonda here. Thanks for the review! To clarify the fast charging issue: many Samsung devices now use the Qualcomm Quick Charge technology, which requires a special chipset for the fast charging to work (Zus doesn’t have this chipset so it is able to be a universal charger). We’ve tested our results and ZUS charges Qualcomm Quick Charge products at normal speeds vs the Quick Charge speeds the OEM chargers offer. Otherwise, ZUS charges any other devices on the market twice as fast. Here are our lab test studies so you can have a better idea of those results: http://www.nonda.co/blogs/news/54743041-zus-versus-other-car-chargers-for-android-devices. Hope this clarifies! Enjoy ZUS this summer!
